
Prof. Matt Baillie Smith

Matt Baillie Smith is a Professor of Global Development and Dean of Research Culture at Northumbria University, UK. His research focuses on civil society, citizenship and development, with particular interests in volunteering in humanitarian and development contexts, and young people and the climate emergency. He has led and co-led a number of large international and interdisciplinary projects funded by government research councils and ministries, NGOs and humanitarian organisations, with recent projects including Refugee Youth Volunteering Uganda, Volunteering, Climate Adaptation and Disasters and Volunteering Together, with VSO. Matt works with a range of humanitarian organisations in the UK and globally, and has particular interests in participatory and co-designed approaches to research. At Northumbria, he leads the Volunteering, Humanitarian Crisis and Development research group and as Dean of Research Culture, works across faculties and services to lead the development of a vibrant, diverse, open and inclusive research culture.
